How to lubricate and maintain steel wire ropes?

I. Lubrication of Steel Wire Ropes: The core is "penetration + protection"

The purpose of lubrication is to form a protective film inside the steel wire rope (between strands and wires) and on its surface, reducing friction and wear, isolating moisture and impurities, and preventing rust.

1. Lubrication timing

Initial lubrication of new ropes: New steel wire ropes may have been coated with base grease when leaving the factory. However, before installation, the lubrication condition should be checked. If the surface grease is insufficient or unevenly distributed, additional lubrication is required.

Regular lubrication: Depending on the usage environment (such as in damp, dusty, high-temperature and other harsh environments, the cycle should be shortened), it is generally recommended to lubricate once every 3 to 6 months. When used frequently or under heavy load, check at least once a month and reapply as needed.

Special circumstances: After the steel wire rope is soaked in rainwater or comes into contact with corrosive substances, it must be cleaned immediately and re-lubricated. When local wear and deformation occur, the damaged area should be lubricated before repair.

2. Cleaning treatment before lubrication

Surface cleaning: Use a hard-bristled brush, cloth or compressed air to remove dust, oil stains, rust and debris from the surface of the steel wire rope to prevent impurities from being wrapped by grease and accelerating wear.

Deep cleaning (if necessary) : If the surface oil stain is thick, it can be rinsed first with kerosene or a special steel wire rope cleaner. After it is completely dry, lubrication can be carried out.

3. Selection of lubricating materials

The appropriate grease/oil should be selected based on the working environment of the steel wire rope. Common types:

General-purpose grease: Suitable for dry and normal temperature environments, such as calcium-based grease and lithium-based grease (with strong adhesion and good water resistance).

Extreme pressure grease: Suitable for high-load and low-speed operation scenarioses (such as cranes and elevators), it can form a stable oil film under high pressure, reducing direct metal contact.

Water-resistant/anti-rust grease: Suitable for damp and open-air environments (such as ships and Bridges), with anti-rust additives added, it has strong resistance to water erosion.

High-temperature grease: Suitable for high-temperature environments (such as metallurgical and forging equipment), it needs to withstand temperatures above 100℃ without flowing away.
